7 Years of Contingent Workforce Expertise, Real Impact, and Why I’d Do It Again
Seven years ago today, I started Tracz Consulting with a clear point of view:
Organizations don’t need more vendors. They need real contingent workforce expertise.
Not theory. Not buzzwords. Not a 40-slide deck that says a lot and solves nothing.
They need consulting grounded in experience. The kind of contingent workforce consulting that helps organizations make informed decisions about non-employee management, strengthen worker classification compliance, and drive measurable return on investment.
Simple idea. Not always simple in practice.
How It Started: Building a Smarter Approach to Non-Employee Management
In the beginning, the focus was tight.
Enterprise organizations.Internally managed programs.Helping companies take control of their contingent workforce instead of defaulting to a Managed Service Provider (MSP) because “that’s what everyone does.”
The work centered on building a structure where none existed.
Not just implementing a Vendor Management System (VMS)…but helping organizations actually use it effectively.
Not just engaging non-employee labor…but doing it in a way that made sense operationally, financially, and from a compliance standpoint.
This was never about checking boxes. It was about building something that worked in the real world.
How It Evolved: From Build to Optimize
What changed wasn’t the work. It was the questions.
Clients stopped asking:“Can you help us build this?”
And started asking:“Can you help us fix this?”“Are we using our MSP the right way?”“Is our VMS actually working for us?”“Are we exposed when it comes to worker classification?”
That shift expanded the scope into full contingent workforce consulting across:
Rate benchmarking and cost optimization
Supplier strategy and performance management
Managed Service Provider (MSP) evaluation and governance
Vendor Management System (VMS) optimization
Independent contractor and worker classification compliance
End-to-end non-employee management strategy
Because the reality is… these challenges don’t exist in silos.
And solving them requires real subject matter expertise.
From Enterprise to Ecosystem
At some point, the work expanded beyond enterprise clients.
Staffing suppliers started reaching out for guidance on how to better position themselves within MSP programs.
Technology providers wanted insight into how their VMS platforms were actually being used in the field.
Even other consulting firms pulled me in when they needed hands-on contingent workforce expertise.
Some of the most impactful work happened quietly.
Behind the scenes. In strategy conversations. In moments where the right perspective changed the direction of an entire program.
That’s the kind of consulting that drives real outcomes.
What Contingent Workforce Consulting Actually Delivers
This isn’t about a list of projects. It’s about outcomes.
I’ve seen organizations move from:
Confusion to clarity
Reactive workforce management to strategic planning
Limited visibility into non-employee spend to full transparency
Compliance risk to confident worker classification practices
Through the right contingent workforce strategy, organizations can:
Improve supplier relationships and performance
Reduce unnecessary costs and rate inconsistencies
Strengthen MSP and VMS effectiveness
Mitigate compliance risk across independent contractor populations
Build scalable, sustainable non-employee labor programs
Cost savings.Efficiency gains.Programs that can fund themselves.
That’s the real ROI of effective contingent workforce consulting.
People-Led. Data-Driven.
This hasn’t changed.
People-led. Data-driven.
Data from your VMS, MSP, and supplier network tells you what’s happening. People across procurement, HR, legal, and the business tell you why it’s happening.
The value comes from connecting the two.
That’s where subject matter expertise matters most.
The Bigger Evolution
The biggest shift hasn’t been the business. It’s been personal.
Somewhere along the way, I stopped measuring success by how busy I was…and started measuring it by alignment.
Today, I feel like a bit of a fly on the wall of the contingent workforce evolution.
Still deeply involved in contingent workforce consulting. Still learning. Still growing.
But also stepping back enough to actually enjoy the life that this work has made possible.
Including two litters of Great Danes and a couple of Jeeps with more personality than they probably should have.

Turns out, managing a contingent workforce strategy and raising puppies have a lot in common:
Structure.Consistency.Anticipating chaos.And a surprising amount of patience.
One just barks more.(But also gives better kisses.)
What Really Matters in Consulting
If there’s one thing I’ve learned in seven years of consulting, it’s this:
Relationships are everything.
Your contingent workforce strategy becomes your brand. But your relationships are what sustain it.
They drive trust. They create opportunity. They bring you back into the room.
I’m incredibly grateful for the people I’ve met through this work. And just as grateful for the ones who knew me before this journey started… who supported me, challenged me, and stayed in my corner along the way.
That’s the part you can’t measure… but it’s the part that matters most.
A Moment That Stood Out
In 2024, being recognized as a Women of Work Pioneer Entrepreneur was one of those moments that made me pause.
Not because of the title…but because it reflected the journey.
The leap into building a consulting business. The commitment to real subject matter expertise. The relationships that made it all possible.
A reminder that building something meaningful in the contingent workforce space is absolutely worth it.

Why I’d Do It Again
There are so many professionals with deep expertise in the contingent workforce sitting on the sidelines, waiting for validation.
You don’t need validation. You need a decision.
Seven years ago, I made that decision.
And I’m genuinely grateful I did.
7 Years In: Contingent Workforce Consulting with Purpose
Today, Tracz Consulting supports enterprise organizations, staffing suppliers, and technology partners across:
Contingent workforce consulting
Non-employee management strategy
Worker classification and compliance
MSP and VMS optimization
Workforce program design and transformation
Still grounded in subject matter expertise. Still people-led and data-driven.
Just with a wider lens… and a deeper appreciation for the journey.
What I Know for Sure
You can build something meaningful from experience.
And when you combine contingent workforce expertise, strong relationships, and the courage to take the leap…
You don’t just build a consulting business.
You build a life.
