From Gold Watches to Gig Work: Why Freelancers Are Winning (and How Companies Can Keep Up)

Remember when sticking with a company for 40 years earned you a pension and a gold watch? That was the dream for many of our parents. My dad spent 41 years at IBM—and I watched him show up every day, buttoned up and committed, in an era where job stability was a badge of honor. We moved states for promotions. Back-to-school shopping included a business suit, not just notebooks, because my sister and I shadowed him at work a couple of times a year. The message was clear: if you work hard and stay loyal, the company takes care of you.

Fast-forward to now, and that entire model has cracked wide open.

Gen X—my generation—watched those promises unravel. We saw layoffs, restructures, and pensions disappear. So, we adapted. We jumped jobs, followed opportunity, and started asking: Is this even worth it?

Then came Gen Z and the Aloha Generation (yes, that’s the next one). They looked at how Gen X chased work-life balance and said, “Nope. We’re building something else entirely.” And they are—through side hustles, freelance gigs, personal brands, and fractional roles.

So how did we get here? And more importantly—how should smart companies respond?

From Career Paths to Revenue Streams

The traditional career ladder has been replaced by something more like a climbing wall—freelancers today choose the holds that make the most sense for their goals, interests, and time.

For me, that transition wasn’t just a trend. It was survival. After a long and successful run in the contingent workforce space (both MSP and VMS), I hit a wall in 2019. I was burned out, underappreciated, and stuck in a toxic work environment. I launched Tracz Consulting not because it was part of a five-year plan, but because I needed to build something that worked for my life.

And once I did? The rest came fast.

Today, Tracz Consulting serves enterprise organizations, staffing suppliers, and extended workforce tech providers. But I also take on due diligence work for private equity firms, lead workshops and training, contribute thought leadership, and—because balance matters—help my partner’s side hustle breeding Great Danes, and that is one of our retirement strategies.

I learned how to balance multiple revenue streams as the need was emerging. Because it was necessary, now for this generation it's a way of life. Kudos to them!

Why Freelancers Are Winning

Today’s freelancers aren’t just between jobs. They are building businesses. They’re strategic, diversified, and often better equipped than traditional employees to deliver project-based work. They know how to:

  • Market themselves

  • Manage their time

  • Adapt to change

  • Monetize skills creatively

They’re not waiting to be discovered—they’re busy building. And the companies that want access to this top-tier talent need to stop acting like “W-2 or bust” is a winning strategy.

What This Means for Employers

If you're not tapping into this workforce, you're missing out. Here's how Tracz Consulting helps organizations stay relevant in the new world of work:

  • Breaking down roles to be filled fractionally or project-based

  • Developing contractor-friendly engagement and onboarding models

  • Building policies for freelancers and consultants that respect both compliance and agility

    • Educating internal resources on the risks associated with worker misclassification

  • Creating smarter, more flexible contingent workforce strategies

We don’t just advise on non-employee labor—we live it. And we help our clients build workforce programs that reflect today’s reality: one where loyalty looks different, flexibility is power, and the best people might be working from a Jeep in the North Georgia mountains when we can find service with a Great Dane in the back seat.

Final Thoughts

The workforce has changed—and so have the workers. The gold watch is gone. The side hustle is here to stay. And if your talent strategy doesn’t reflect that shift, it’s time to catch up.

At Tracz Consulting, we help you do just that. Whether you're trying to attract independent consultants, rework job descriptions into fractional roles, or build a more flexible labor model—we’ve got the experience, insights, and passion to guide the way.

We don’t just believe in the future of work. We’ve built our business on it.

Want help designing a workforce strategy that fits the way people work today?
